Every time you go up a size it'll look like GIGANTIC until you put it on and you'll see that it'll actually work well. I changed my little newborn all when I was 5 weeks (-3 weeks adjusted) and at that time she had a little more than 6 pounds. My term DD was born in 6 pounds and used NB diapers until I was 8 pounds. My premature son, I'm pretty sure, started using NB diapers around that 6-pound mark as well. Sounds like you had to think about changing NB because of leakage problems. It wouldn't hurt at least to try because you'll need them for a while anyway. Our ICU nurses started putting DS in the NB diaper when he hit 5 pounds. When he hit 6ish lbs, the preemie diapers still fit but as you are finding, they frequently filtered. (I was given a pack of premature-size diapers as a gift at DS EDD.) I found that NB-size diapers weren't much bigger than preemie's size. In general, as soon as the DS hit the lower weight limit for any diaper size, it was able to move up. I don't wait until your current size is adjusted, but that's just a personal preference. We don't keep the girls in premature diapers too long. When we measured the preemie until the nb didn't seem too big of the difference. We just doubled the top to make them shorter in the front. We went to newborns about 6 pounds. I don't wait until they get really tight, just wait until you finish the size you currently have and when you buy diapers I do so based on your current weight. For example, we used Huggies 1-2s (up to 15 pounds) after the newborns and while I could have purchased more I went to regular 2's this last time.
